Converted
pick-up trucks called songthaews serve as local buses during daylight
hours. Each Songthaew's destination is clearly marked in English
on the front and sides of the vehicle. Songthaews can usually be
found in Nathon taking people from the ferries, but there are no
official stops around the island. Just flag down the first one you
see, and tell the driver where you would like to go. The furthest
journey, i.e. from Nathon to Chaweng, should cost no more than 30
baht per person and shorter trips a bit less. Songthaews do run
at night, but fares increase sharply after 6pm, so should you wish
to charter a vehicle late at night from Chaweng or Lamai to outlying
areas such as Maenam, the fare could urn as high as several hundred
baht. Generally speaking at night, the moue people who are already
in a Songthaew, the cheaper it will be.
