The town is smaller
and more compact than Chaweng, Certainly more laid back and with
a stronger village feeling as most restaurants, bars, cafes and
even the main nightclub
are all concentrated in the small but lively center, known as "Lamai
Gulch". This area is pretty tacky and is home to dozens of
girlie bars, although probably less than in Chaweng-they seem more
conspicuous here and the girls are certainly noisier. Development
has been a little slower and not as well financed as its neighbor
and the trend in Lamai has been lower rise lower scale resorts.
Although there are a few smart resorts, there is definitely a much
higher proportion if budget accommodation available in Lamai. It
also seems to have become a magnet for health and healing resorts
and a number of healing centers and spas have popped up over the
last few years causing the northern stretch to be named "Longevity
beach". It also seems to be more popular with Scandinavian
and German visitors and these groups certainly account for at least
70% of foreign tourists. There is certainly not as much choice when
it comes to eating and drinking, but there are a few good restaurants
and Chaweng is only a twenty-minute taxi ride away. Lamai is still
a bit of a travelers hang out and you will find many people who
have been coming here for years rubbing shoulders with families
and couples.
